Dear Mr. COO:

Dear COO of _________ in Ventura, Ca. (I thought about putting his name and business):

RE: They’re not the bottom; they’re the fucking foundation

During our meeting today at Lure Fish House, I sat & listened to your nonsensical theory on why recruiting & employee retention is plummeting. You rambled on (often incoherently) about your misconstrued, blinded perception of this landscape – I LOL’d & left our lunch early.

Please take a few minutes to hear me out – it’s a 3-minute read.

Businesses (especially sales companies) are built on the backs of hard-working people who don’t get paid very much, don’t receive ample respect, and are justifiably distrustful of the promises they heard before applying, during training, and have been hearing for years.

And referring to these folks as the people at the bottom of the org chart pisses me off, makes matters worse, and certainly doesn’t help.

Imagine this: throughout your career you were paid shit (as little as legally possible), the last to be hired and the first to be laid off. Imagine that the boss gets more vacation days, doesn’t have to clock in and out, and is actually given control over how he/she spends his/her time. Imagine that.

So, PLEASE TELL ME, why is it so surprising to “bosses” like you & recruiters, then, that their retention is awful, you get negative reviews on Glassdoor & Social, and that some workers respond to this arrangement by doing as little work as possible? REALLY?!

Here’s the thing: people actually want to do a good job. They want to be proud of their work, they appreciate being engaged (especially with leaders & executives), and they thrive when they have some measure of control over their day.

This is why your people are mediocre, you have high turnover, low trust, no care, open jobs, bad reviews.

The good news is there’s an alternative. But it’s a process, not an event for lazy people. And since you’re lazy, I won’t share it with you (anyone else reading this, message me and I’ll gladly share it with you).

Those people you referred to as the bottom of your org and acted like your time is far too valuable for them… they’re your foundation; they’re not the bottom.

So treat them like it – and kick the cheap tie.
