New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work

So, it’s about that time of year where the majority of us write down our New Year’s resolutions, get all excited, post hackneyed quotes, go to the gym the first 2 weeks of January, and slowly forget about all that hype – oh boy.

People, don’t feel alone – businesses do the same thing.

Here are 2 reasons your New Year’s Resolutions Won’t Work:

  1. It’s probably tactical and not “cultural”.
    1. Meaning, your resolution is focused on a tactical change. Tactics won’t work if it’s not a cultural match. You can strive to be a more “social” business in 2018, but if your company culture doesn’t map that, you’re done.
  2. All preach, no practice
    1. Resolutions, much like culture (and the facade Mission Statement), aren’t words on a piece paper or website; they’re our day to day actions & practices.

New Year’s resolutions rarely work, because good intentions don’t often survive a collision with reality. The reality of it is 99% of your actions won’t match or map your resolutions for 2018.

But hey, good luck.

Happy New Year 🎊 🎉

  1. If this is accurate I don’t know what is. I see this every quarter at our office with our new goals we set and how they resemble new years resolutions. They all sound good on paper but no one is willing to change the hard stuff to make it work. Wish you’d write this stuff more. See you in New York in a few weeks.

  2. Classic Mark Ryan with calling people in their bullshit. You called me on mine 5 years ago and I didn’t like you for a long time. But that was me being an idiot. do you mark ryan! Happy new year man.
